Hungary's foreign ministry has filed a criminal complaint over possible fraud related to the previous government's purchase of ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign Minister Anita Orbán said Tuesday that an investigation conducted my the ministry has raised suspicions of financial misconduct. The previous government, led by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, bought around 17,000 ventilators from China in early 2020. Critics argued that the purchase exceeded needs and was overpriced. The investigation revealed attempts to delete documents and questioned the former leadership's responsibility. Former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who managed the purchase, recently resigned his seat in Parliament to take an executive job with Chinese automaker BYD.
