When Hungary and Ireland were drawn together in the same group for the 1990 World Cup, along with Spain, Northern Ireland and Malta, it was the Hungarians who had all the pedigree. Although no longer the force they were in the 1950s, they had still been to successive World Cup finals in 1978, 1982 and 1986, while the Republic had never qualified.
